How to Keep Your Roofing Cost Down

If you've ever purchased a new roof then you know this is an expensive proposition.

And the bad news is that the cost isn't coming down. So if you currently need a new roof you know the roofing cost is going to be high. The good news is that there are ways to reduce this cost.

Obviously the square footage of your roof is a primary factor in determining how much money you are about to spend. The more square footage you have, the more materials you're going to need. Materials make up a significant portion of the cost.

But square footage is not the only factor. The pitch of your roof also plays a role. The pitch is simply the angle of your roof. A steeper pitch means the roof is harder to work on. A harder job means a higher cost. These are things you just cannot control.

What you can control is the type of roof you install. Talk to your contractor about what's available. A lot depends on your location, but there are generally some materials that are available that will keep the price tag down. If you are going with asphalt shingles, there are shingles that will not last as long. They'll be cheaper but remember that you'll be doing the job again in a shorter period of time. Perhaps this is worth it to you. If you will be selling your house in the near future, this may be the way to go to keep the roofing cost down.

Clearly there is no set way or magic formula to determine your roofing cost. There are just too many factors to consider and most of them are out of your control. Get estimates from several contractor. They will be able to explain your options and the best way to keep the price from being too high.
